On April 2~3, 2023 at a district in Gangnam populated with private academies, drug dealers presented beverage mixed withmethamphetamine as a “drink to improve concentration” and encouraged students to taste it. The drug dealers made the studentsfill out phone numbers of their parents on a questionnaire, called the parents, and threatened the parents that they would report tothe police the factthattheir children used illegal substances.Accordingly, the Commissioner General through a video conference with police chiefs of metropolitan and provincial polices onApril 12, and defined the drug drink blackmail incidentin Gangnam as an “act ofterror which destroys a community”.As a result, the police, within 5 days, arrested 7 suspects who distributed the drug drinks in Korea and arrested a total of 59 personsincluding 37 persons who operated the relay station used in the blackmail phones, or distributed USIM cards opened in the namesof a third party; 4 suspects who sold or aided the sale of USIM cards and Kakao Talk accounts and 11 other suspects.Particularly in April 2023, Commissioner General Yoon Hee Keun confirmed that the person who planned the drug drink blackmailing in Gangnam sent drugs while staying in China.
